Cell Vocabulary

TermDefinition
prokaryote Simple cells WITHOUT a nucleus or most organelles (DNA floats in the cytoplasm)
eukaryote Complex cell with a nucleus that holds the DNA. Has organelles.
organelle Parts of the cell that help the cell do certain functions
Golgi apparatus modifies and packages proteins and determines where they go
endoplasmic reticulum makes proteins and other molecules and transports them around cell
cell wall a strong structure outside of the cell membrane that give the cell support
cell membrane a selectively permeable structure that allows some things to pass in and out and not others
cytoplasm jelly-like fluid inside the cell membrane. Contains water and dissolved nutrients.
choloroplast organelle in PLANT cells. It's where plants make their own food (photosynthesis). They are green and make leaves green.
nucleus the round part near the center of the cell. 1. It controls the cells functions and tells it what to do 2. It holds the DNA
DNA genetic info passed on from parents that give the organism instructions
selectively permeable selective= choosy permeable= pass through selectively permeable= choosy about what can pass through (not everything!)
central vacuole stores a LARGE amount of water in PLANT cells
mitochondria (more than 1=mitochondrion) organelle in ALL eukaryotes. Uses oxygen to break down sugar to release energy to keep cell alive.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
