Protists and Fungi Test 04/22/09

QuestionAnswer
What are protozoans? Animal-like protists.
Why are sporozoans parasitic? Because they don't move. Parasites don't need to move, they just cling to their hosts.
What protists causes plasmodium? Sporozoans.
Name one type of unicellular algae. Euglena
What are diatoms made of? Silica.
Name one example of a fungi-like protist. slime molds or water molds.
Are Fungi prokaryotes or eukaryotes? Eukaryotes.
Which is the only fungus considered to be unicellular? Yeast.
Describe one way fungi can reproduce asexually. When cells or hyphae break off from fungus and begin to grow on their own.
What is the advantage to reproducing Sexually? More genetic diversity and better chance of adapting than if it where to reproduce asexually.
Name 2 phylums w/i the Kingdom Fungi and give an example of each. Zygomycota (Mold), and Ascomycota (Yeast)
What is the purpose of a Pellicle? It protects the protists and helps is retain its shape.
Draw and label a mushroom.
