How Animals Live
| Term | Definition |

| nymph | a stage in an insect life cycle between egg and adult that looks like an adult but has no wings. |
| amphibian | an animal with a backbone that lives part of its life cycle in water and part on land. |
| tadpole | a very young frog or toad |
| gills | the parts of fish and tadpoles that are used to take in oxygen from water. |
| embryo | a developing animal before it is born. |
| larva | a young animal that has a different shape than the adult. |
| pupa | the stage in the insect life cycle between larva and adult. |
| mammal | an animal with a backbone and hair or fur; mothers produce milk for their babies. |
| instinct | an action that an animal can do without learning. |
