Elements/Principles of Design

QuestionAnswer
What are the elements of design? line, form/shape, texture, color, and space.
What are the principles of design? balance, rhythm, proportion/scale, emphasis, unity
What is the principle repetition? design is copied or repeated
How does texture affect color? smooth textures reflect light and look brighter, shinier, and more intense. rough textures absorb more light and look darker and duller.
What do curved lines suggest? coziness, comfort, naturalness, delicateness
What is the difference between horizontal, vertical, and radial balance? how the parts are distributed- horizontally, vertically, or radiated
What do diagonal lines suggest? movement, activity, excitement
What is space? the area around, above, and within an object.
What are the four types of rhythm? gradation, radiation, repetition, continuous line
What is asymmetrical balance? Example? parts of the design are not identical but are equal in visual weight (ex) a book shelf
What is the difference between horizontal and vertical lines? horizontal lines suggest different characteristics from vertical lines. horizontal: relaxed + peaceful while vertical: strength + stability
What is the golden mean? 3 to 5 ratio
What is the difference between shape and form? shape is 2D while form is 3D
What are the five types of balance? symmetrical, asymmetrical, horizontal, vertical, radial balance
What does unity or harmony mean? all elements and principles of design work together to create harmony
What are the two things texture involves? how a surface feels to your touch or how it looks like it would feel if you were to touch it
What are the four types of line? vertical, horizontal, diagonal, curved
What is proportion? how the design is visually divided
Which of the five types of balance suggests excitement or interest? radial
What is symmetrical balance? Example? when both parts are identical (ex) humans
What is emphasis? What is another name for it? one object or item stands out. aka focal point
What happens when you use a continuous line? design creates a line to follow
What is another name for symmetrical balance? formal balance
What is another name for asymmetrical balance? informal balance
What is the difference between gradation and radiation? radiation: lines or designs move out from focal point while gradation: designs increase/decrease in size- one element of design changes
