Elements and Principles of Design
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What are the elements of design? | Color, Shape/Form, Line, Space and Texture |
What are the principles of design? | Balance, Rhythm, Proportion/Scale, Emphasis and Unity |
What is the principle repetition? | When a design is copied or repeated |
How does texture affect color? | Smooth/shiny textures reflect light and look brighter and rough textures absorb more light and look darker and duller |
What do curved lines suggest? | Coziness, comfort, naturalness and delicateness |
What is the difference between horizontal, vertical, and radial balance? | Horizontal balance is when left and right parts are equal. Vertical balance is when top and bottom parts are equal. Radial balance is when elements radiate out from design. |
What do diagonal lines suggest? | Movement, Activity, and Excitement |
What is space? | The are provided for a particular purpose and can be 2D or #D |
What are the four types of rhythm? | Gradation, Radiation, Repetition and Continuous Line |
What is asymmetrical balance? Example? | They do not math and they are parts of the design that are not identical but are equal in visual weight. Example: a bowl on one side of the cabinet but on the other side of the cabinet plates stacked the height of the bowl |
What is the difference between horizontal and vertical lines? | Horizontal lines go from left to right and vertical lines lead the eye up |
What is the golden mean? | 3:5 and is the proportion that most people use when building |
What is the difference between shape and form? | A shape Is a flat or silhouette images and is 2D and Form is the outline edges of a three dimensional object |
What are the five types of balance? | Asymmetrical, Symmetrical, Vertical, Horizontal and Radial |
What does unity or harmony mean? | That all elements and principles of design work together to create harmony |
What are the two things texture involves? | How a surface appears to feel and how a surface feels |
What are the four types of line? | Vertical, Horizontal, Diagonal and Curved |
What is proportion? | How the design is visually divided and when each parts of something are the right size to belong to a whole |
Which of the five types of balance suggests excitement or interest? | Asymmetrical |
What is symmetrical balance? Example? | When both parts of a shape correspond or match on opposite sides of a median dividing line. Ex: humans, plants, butterflies (insects) |
What is emphasis? What is another name for it? | One object or item that stands out, another name is the focal point |
What happens when you use a continuous line? | It creates a continuous line for your eye to follow |
What is another name for symmetrical balance? | Formal Balance |
What is another name for asymmetrical balance? | Informal Balance |
What is the difference between gradation and radiation? | Gradation is design increase in size and one element of design changes. Radiation is lines or design move out from center point |
