Elements and Principles

QuestionAnswer
What are the elements of design? Line, Form/Shape, Color, Space, and Texture
What are the principles of design? Balance, Rhythm, Proportion/Scale, Emphasis, Unity
What is the principle repetition? A design that is copied or repeated more than once
How does texture affect color? Smooth textures reflect light and look brighter and rough textures absorb more light and look darker.
What do curved lines suggest? Coziness, comfort, naturalness, and delicateness
What is the difference between horizontal, vertical, and radial balance? Horizontal balance is left and right parts are equal. Vertical balance are top and bottom parts are balanced. Radial balance radiates out from design.
What do diagonal lines suggest? Movement, activity, and excitement.
What is space? Everything in the room. (Height)
What are the four types of rhythm? Graduation, Radiation, Repetition, and Continuous Line
What is asymmetrical balance? Example? Parts of the design aren't identical but are equal in visual weight. Ex: A statue
What is the difference between horizontal and vertical lines? Vertical lines go up and down and horizontal lines goes left to right.
What is the golden mean? 3 to 5 ratio
What is the difference between shape and form? Shape refers to 2D objects and Form refers to 3D objects.
What are the five types of balance? Symmetrical, Asymmetrical, Vertical, Horizontal, and Radial
What does unity or harmony mean? All the elements and principles or design work together create harmony.
What are the two things texture involves? The way a surface feels or looks if we were to look or touch it.
What are the four types of line? Vertical, Horizontal, Diagonal, and Curved
What is proportion? Each of the parts are the right size to belong to the whole.
Which of the five types of balance suggests excitement or interest? Radial balance
What is symmetrical balance? Example? when both parts are identical Ex:Humans
What is emphasis? What is another name for it? When one object or item stands out also known as a focal point in a design.
What happens when you use a continuous line? It creates a continuous line for an eye to follow.
What is another name for symmetrical balance? Formal balance
What is another name for asymmetrical balance? Informal balance
What is the difference between gradation and radiation? Gradation are designs that increase or decrease in size. Radiation are lines or designs that move out from center point.
