Principles of Design

What are the elements of design? lines, color, texture, value, shape, space
What are the principles of design? Balance, Movement, Proportion/Scale, Emphasis, Unity
What is the principle repetition? designed is copied or repeated
How does texture affect color? the different textures will absorb and reflect the light differently
What do curved lines suggest? They suggest compfort, saftey. and relaxation.
What is the difference between horizontal, vertical, and radial balance? Horizontal is when the right and left side of a work have great similarities. vertical is when the top and bottom of a work have great similarities, and a radical is when there are similar characteristics from the center of a work.
What do diagonal lines suggest? They are unbalanced, uncontrolled, and restless energy.
What is space? An continuous area that is free, unoccupied, or available.
What are the four types of rhythm? Repetition, alternation, progression, undulation
What is asymmetrical balance? Example? Parts of the design that are not identical but are equal in visual weight. Ex. pillows being different colors on different side of the couch.
What is the difference between horizontal and vertical lines? Horizontal Lines go across and vertical lines go up and down.
What is the golden mean? 3 to 5 Ratio
What is the difference between shape and form? A shape is like a circle or rectangle in a design. A form is a three dimensional object.
What are the five types of balance? Symmetrical, Asymmetrical, Radial, Crystallographic
What does unity or harmony mean? They show the relationship of the elements.
What are the two things texture involves? Two dimensional and three dimensional
What are the four types of line? Vertical, Horizontal, Diagonal, Curved
What is proportion? A part or share in comparison of the whole.
Which of the five types of balance suggests excitement or interest? Asymmetrical Balance
What is symmetrical balance? Example? When weights are equal on both sides of a composition. ex. same pillows on both sides of a couch.
What is emphasis? What is another name for it? Is an area that more attention in drawn too. Accent
What happens when you use a continuous line? It draws your eye up or down the line.
What is another name for symmetrical balance? Mirror image
What is another name for asymmetrical balance? Unbalanced
What is the difference between gradation and radiation? Gradation is when objects go from large to small or colors from light to dark. Radiation is the balance around a central point.
