| Characterization | the act of creating and developing a character |
| Direct Characterization | the author states a character's trait |
| Indirect Characterization | we read the words/thoughts/actions of a character; we read descriptions of a character's appearance |
| Flashback | a section of a literary work that interrupts the chronological presentation of events to relate an event from an early time |
| Allusion | a reference to a well known person, place, event, literary work or work of art |
| Simile | a direct comparison between two subjects using either "like" or "as" |
| Narrator | person who tells the story |
| Irony | a situation that ends up differently than one would have expected |
| Central Idea | what the text is mainly about; a message the author is trying to convey |
| Hyperbole | extremely exaggeration |
| Metaphor | comparison when author states that one thing is another thing |
