flashcards for questions and concepts on chapter six

QuestionAnswer
cellular respiration the process of converting the carbon in sugars to electrons to create atp
kiloccalories a measure of the quantity of heat to raise the temperature of 1 kilogram of water by 1 degree c
redox reaction reduction and oxidation reaction
oxidation the subtraction of electron molecules by removing oxygen
reduction the addition of electrons via addition of hydrogen
nad+ a molecule capable of reducing to nadh a carrying atom for the electron transport chain,
glycolysis the process of breaking down six carbon glucose or another simple sugar to two three carbon pyruvates
citric acid ( krebs) cycle the process of oxidizing pyruvate molecules to form electrons and a waste product of co2
oxidative phosphorylation the process of creating a positive environment outside of the cell that turns the atp synthase via chemiosmosis
chemiosmosis the potential energy of the positive outside cell conduces osmosis that spins the atp synthase creating atp
substrate level phosphorylation the process of forming atp by combining the phosphate group of a substrate with a molecule of adp
acetyl coenzyme a ( acetyl coA) a coenzyme produced by the krebs cycle that is formed by combining coenzyme a with a two carbon group
ATP synthase the enzyme embedded in the cell membrane that produces atp
lactic acid fermentation as our cells work anaerobically nadh can be synthetically produced but pyruvates become lactate
alcoholic fermentation fermenting for the purpose of creating alcoholic beverages and ethanol

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
