Color Terms

What is a color? An element of design.
How is color perceived? Color occurs when light in different wavelengths strikes our eyes. Color is perceived differently by everyone. Colors can change depending on the type of lighting you're using
What are the three forms of light? Incandescent, Fluorescent, and Natural.
What is a hue? A hue refers to color itself.
What is the color wheel? It's the most important tool to use while designing. It's made up of primary, secondary, and tertiary colors.
What are the primary colors? Red, Yellow, and Blue.
What are the secondary colors? Green, Orange, and Violet.
What are the tertiary colors? Also considered intermediate colors, such as red-violet, yellow-green, blue-green...so on and so forth.
What are the colors on the color wheel called? Saturated colors.
What are tints and shades? A tint is a saturated color that is mixed with white to make it seem lighter. A shade is basically the opposite, so in this case, you add black to the saturated color.
What are the warm colors? Red, Orange, and Yellow.
What are the cool colors? Green, Blue, and Violet.
What are the neutral colors? Black, Grey, Tan. White, and Brown.
What is a monochromatic color harmony? Tints and shades of one color. (Ex. navy blue, baby blue, and a solid blue all in one room)
What is an analogous color harmony? Three or more colors that are next to each other on the color wheel.
What is a complimentary color harmony? Opposite colors on the color wheel. (Ex. Blue and Orange)
What is a triadic color harmony? Three colors equal distance from each other on the color wheel.
What is a split complimentary harmony? Any color and the two colors next to the set color's compliment. (Ex. Yellow, Red-Violet, and Blue-Violet)
What is a neutral color harmony? Any combination of brown, tan, black, grey, and/or white.
What is an accented neutral color harmony? Adding one color in a small amount to a neutral room. (Ex. tan and brown room with orange pillows)
