RBMS Digestive

Digestive System

QuestionAnswer
Digestive System provides nutrients and energy from food/drinks for all body cells
mechanical digestion physically making food smaller (by mashing, chopping, or grinding)
chemical digestion breaking down food with acid and enzymes.
chyme soupy food after it’s begun mechanical & chemical digestion.
Peristalsis is the process of smooth muscles pushing food along the digestive track
Esophagus tube connecting mouth to stomach
Stomach muscular bag that squeezes food & acid together (mech & chem)
Small Intestine long, skinny organ that absorbs food’s nutrients into blood (chem)
Large Intestine wide,short organ that absorbs water & vitamins from leftover chyme (chem)
Rectum stores feces (undigested solid waste)
Anus opening that releases feces
Liver makes bile (green fluid) to break down fats (chem)
Gallbladder stores bile, then sends it to small intestine.
Pancreas secretes enzymes & neutralizes stomach acid (chem)
Appendix small, hook-like organ with no function in humans.
