Robert Hooke (1665) coined term "cells" on viewing cork; 1st person to describe microorganisms[mold]
Anton Von Leeuwenhoek (1684) made his own microscopes; 1st to describe bacterial cells "wee animalcules"
Ferdinand Cohn (1860s) Founder of Science of Bacteriology; developed basic bacteriological practices; developed initial classification scheme for bacteria; established scientific journal of Bacteriology; worked with Bacillus and Clostridium(spore-forming organism)
Louis Pasteur found out that microbes do lactic acid fermentation; yeast in alcohol fermentation; disapproved of spontaneous generation(swan flask); developed vaccines to rabies, chicken cholera and anthrax
Robert Koch developed methods for pure culture of microorganisms; postulates for determination of etiological agents; discovered cause of tuberculosis; created what is known as Koch's postulates
Martinez Beijerinck Microbial selection(enrichment culture); 1st to describe viruses; identified nitrogen fixers, sulfate reducers
Sergei Winogradsky developed concept of chemolithotrophy; discovered several species, Microbiologie du Sol
