| objective lens | enlarges the image of the specimen |
| stage | platform that holds the specimen |
| light source | light bulb that provides light for viewing the specimen |
| magnification | the increasing of an objects apparent size |
| nose piece | structure that holds the objective lenses |
| resolution | the power to show details clearly in an image |
| scanning electron microscope(SEM) | passes a beam of electron over the surface of the specimen (3d and uncut specimen) |
| transmission electron microscope(TEM) | transmits a beam of electron through the thinly sliced specimen |
| metric system | system of measurement that uses the power of 10s |
| base unit | describe length, mass. time and other quantities (seconds, inches) |
