Vocabulary

TermDefinition
domain the broadest category; the category that contains kingdoms.
kingdom the highest taxonomic category, which contains a group of similar phyla.
ecology the branch of biology that studies organisms interacting with each other and with the environment.
ecosystem communities of living species and their physical environment.
evolution the process in which the inherited characteristics within populations change over generations.
natural selection the process by which individuals that are better adapted to their environment survive and reproduce more successfully than less well adapted individuals do; a theory to explain the mechanism of evolution.
adaptation traits that improve an individual's ability to survive and reproduce.
