| nucleic acid core | DNA or RNA found in the center of a virus |
| capsid | A protein shell that protects the nucleic acid of a virus |
| lipid envolope | Outermost layer of some viruses |
| surface proteins | Protein projections that help a virus attach to a host cell |
| tail sheath | A tube of proteins that helps penetrate host cells during infection. Found with bacteriophages. |
| tail fiber | Thin rod-like structure used to attach to a host cell. Found with bacteriophages |
