Organelles-function

Plant and Animal Cells

TermFunction
Nucleus Control centre. Contains chromosomes made up of DNA.
Nucleolus Manufacture subunits that combine to form ribosomes
Ribosomes Manufacture proteins. (Factories)
Cell Membrane or Plasma Membrane Regulates movement of materials in and out of cells. Encloses cell content. Helps maintain cell shape. Communicates between cells.
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum Manufactures, processes & transports proteins.
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum Production of fats & steroids. Detoxification of drugs & poisons.
Golgi Apparatus Final synthesis & packaging of proteins into vesicles. Vesicles fuse with cell wall & release contents to outside of cell by EXOCYTOSIS.
Mitochondria Release energy (powerhouse)
Lysosome Breakdown debris. (garbage disposal) Digest 'worn out' or damaged organelles
Chloroplasts Plant Cells only. Photosynthesis
Vacuole Large in Plant Cells. Support & storage.
Cell Wall NOT an organelle. Plant Cells only. Support, defines cell shape, prevents expansion. Allows water & substances to pass through freely.
Centrioles During Cell Division - spindle forms between Centrioles
Vesicles Membrane bound 'sacs' involved in transport.
