Origin Of Germ Layers

Order of OccurrenceKey Terms
Step 1 Cleavage, yeilding solid ball of cells (Morula)
Step 2 Division continues, blastocoel develops, hollow ball of cells now called blastula.
Step 3 Gastrulation. Germ layers form as hollow blastula transfroms into 3-layered gastrula
Step 4 Surface cells move inwards through blastopore, which forms in the embryo
Step 5 Cells continue to involute, and occulde blastocoel while establishing another cavity called the archenteron (primitive gut)
Step 6 Opening of archenteron is closed by a yolk plug.
Step 7 Cells that move inwards are replaced by other cells that spread out on the surface (epiboly).
Step 8 Blastopore closes to encompass yolk, and marks position of future anus.
Step 9 This results in a 3-layered structure around a cavity.
