BIOSCI 107 (Lec 1)
Origin Of Germ Layers
| Order of Occurrence | Key Terms |
|---|---|
| Step 1 | Cleavage, yeilding solid ball of cells (Morula) |
| Step 2 | Division continues, blastocoel develops, hollow ball of cells now called blastula. |
| Step 3 | Gastrulation. Germ layers form as hollow blastula transfroms into 3-layered gastrula |
| Step 4 | Surface cells move inwards through blastopore, which forms in the embryo |
| Step 5 | Cells continue to involute, and occulde blastocoel while establishing another cavity called the archenteron (primitive gut) |
| Step 6 | Opening of archenteron is closed by a yolk plug. |
| Step 7 | Cells that move inwards are replaced by other cells that spread out on the surface (epiboly). |
| Step 8 | Blastopore closes to encompass yolk, and marks position of future anus. |
| Step 9 | This results in a 3-layered structure around a cavity. |
