Science notes for Chapter 2

Chlorophyll the green substance inside leaves that helps a plant use light energy to make its food
deciduous plants that lose all their leaves at the same time every year
evergreen a plant that stays green and makes food all year long
leaf the part of a plant that grows out of the stem and is where the plant makes food.
nutrients things in the soil that helps plants grow and stay healthy
photosynthesis the process that plants use to make sugar
roots the parts of a plant that grow underground and take water and nutrients from the soil
seeds the first stage of life for many plants
stem the part of the plant that grows above ground and helps hold the plant up
What do plants need to live? they need air water sunlight and soil to live
Where can you find plants? they can be found almost anywhere on Earth
What is the function of a stem? A stem supports the plant and brings the water from the roots to the leaves
What is the function of a leaf? A leaf is where the water and carbon dioxide is turned into sugar and oxygen
What is the function of the roots? The roots suck in water and hold the plant in the ground
What is the function of the flower? The flower makes the seeds to reproduce the plant
Why are seeds important? Seeds make sure the species of plant doesn't die out
How do plants without flowers reproduce? Plants without flowers reproduce using cones or spores
How is it possible that plants can live everywhere? Plants use their parts to get what they need
How do scientists group plants? Scientists group plants by their leaves
What is a deciduous plant? A deciduous plant loses its leaves every year in the fall
What is an evergreen plant? An evergreen plant does not lose its leaves every year
What helps the plant during photosynthesis? The leaf has chlorophyll to help it.
How are plants helpful? Plants are a source of energy medicine and materials for clothing
How are plants harmful? Some plants are poisonous and people can be allergic to some plant parts
