what are the 3 functions of leaves? photosynthesis( food making), transpiration(water loss), and respiration( getting carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen)
what are the 2 types of leaves? simple and compound
simple one big blade ex. oak, maple
compound blades that are separated into separate leaflike parts ex. clovers, palms
where and how does transpiration happen? it happens through the stoma when the guard cells swell and open then water leaves the leaf
what are the uses of a leaf? drugs, dyes, medicine, food, deadly poisons, digitalis
why are there hairs on leaves? to protect the leaf from small insects and other things, and to control temperature
what is the formula for photosynthesis in words? 6 carbon dioxide and 6 water (with sunlight and chlorophyll) makes sugar glucose and 6 oxygen
whats the formula for photosynthesis? 6CO^2+ 6H^2O w/ sunlight&chlorophyll= C^6H^12O^6+ 6O^2
cuticle prevents water loss
epidermis helps protect leaf
palisade mesophyll where most of photosynthesis takes place, where chlorophyll takes place
spongey mesophyll absorbs air to find carbon dioxide
stoma allows certain elements to go through, in or out, of leaf
guard cells opens and closes stoma when needed
xylem carries water up from roots to leaf for photosynthesis
phloem carries food from leaf to plant
