| Overpopulation | When there are too many organisms of a species in an environment |
| Native | Plants and animals that are naturally found in an ecosystem. |
| Organism | Living things (both plants and animals) |
| Producer | Plants (able to make their own food through photosynthesis) |
| Consumer | Organisms that eat to get energy because they can't make their own food. |
| Carnivore | Eats meat, including insects and other animals |
| Omnivore | Eats both plants and meat |
| Herbivore | Eats plants and plant materials such as berries and nuts |
| Decomposer | An organism that breaks down dead organisms and returns nutrients to the soil |
| Food Web | Shows the flow of energy from one organism to another within an ecosystem |
| Predator | An animal that hunts for food |
| Prey | An animal that is being hunted for food |
| Niche | An organisms job in an ecosystem |
| Habitat | The place where an organism lives |
| Carbon Dioxide | The gas that animals exhale, while they inhale oxygen |
| Oxygen | The gas that plants produce |
| Respiration | The act of breathing |
| Photosynthesis | The process of plants taking in sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide and producing oxygen and sugar for energy. |
| Species | Organisms that are similar to one another and can reproduce |
| Adaptation | A characteristic or trait that helps a species to survive |
| Camouflage | A characteristic that helps organisms to blend in with their environment |
| Mimicry | When one species copies characteristics of another in order to survive |
| Inherited trait | A physical trait that gets passed down from parent to offspring. Ex: Blue Eyes |
| Acquired Characteristic | Something that happens to an organism that won't be passed down to offspring Ex: A scar |
| Instinct | All animals of the species do this without having been taught. Ex: migration |
| Learned Behavior | Something an organism is taught to do. Ex: Reading a book |
| Plant Life Cycle | seed, seedling, adult plant, flower, fruit |
| Offspring | a plant or animal's child or children. |
| Benefit | something that produces good or helpful results or effects or that promotes well-being of the plant or animal |
| Structural adaptation | physical features of an organism like the bill on a bird or the fur on a bear |
| Behavioral adaptation | the unique things organisms do to survive |
