| Evolution | change over time in the genectic composition of a population, also refers to the gradual appearance of all biological diversity |
| Artificial selection | modifying a variety of domesticated plants and animals over many generations by selecting individuals with the desired traits as breeding stock. |
| Natural selection | A population can change over generations if individuals with certain heritable traits leave more offspring than others. |
| adaptations | characteristics of organisms that enhance their survival and reproduction in specific environments |
| homologous structures | anatomical resemblances that represent variations on a structural theme present in common ancestor |
| vestigial structures | No importance to organism, but had important functions in ancestors. Some are homologous structures. |
| convergent evoltion | the evolution of similar features in independent evolutionary linages |
