How Plants Live

QuestionAnswer
Xylem Vascular tissue in plants that carries water and minerals from the roots to stems and leaves.
Phloem Vascular tissue in plants that carries food from leaves to other parts of the plant
What are the functions of roots? To hold the plant in the ground, absorb water, stores food and transport them to different parts of the plant
What are the three main parts of a leave? Petiole, blade and veins.
Stomata Allows carbon dioxide and oxygen to enter the leaf.
Chlorophyll The green pigment in plants that absorbs light energy for photosynthesis.
Why are leaves green They are green because they contain chloroplasts (a green pigment that contains chlorophyll.
What do plants need to make food Sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide
Why is oxygen important Oxygen is important because it breaks down food to release the chemical energy stored in it.
Nectar A sweet liquid that many kinds of flowers produce
Germinate Start to grow into a new plant
Pollination The process by which pollen is transferred from the stamen to the pistil.
