Unit 1 vocabulary

cell vocabulary. Structure and Function of Cells

TermDefinition
cell membrane Structure that surrounds the cell and allows materials in and out of the cell.
structure How something is formed. How it looks or is shaped.
function What something does or the operation it performs.
osmosis The diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane.
diffusion The movement of particles from an area of high concentration into an area of lower concentration.
mitosis The process of cell division.
cell The smallest functional unit of living things.
cytoplasm The jelly-like substance found inside of a cell.
nucleus The control center of the cell.
mitochondrian Organelle that supplies energy to the cell. The "powerhouse" of the cell.
vacuole Storage area of the cell.The largest organelle in plant cells.
organelle means "tiny organ". Structures found within cells that perform life functions for the cell.
ribosomes organelle that synthesizes proteins. Found scattered throughout the cytoplasm and on rough E.R.
spontaneous generation The mistaken idea that living things could come from non-living things.
