A marine protected area is an area designated to protect marine ecosystems, processes, habitats and species which can contribute to the restoration and replenishment of resources for social, economic and cultural enrichment. MPA
why are MPA's needed? to maintain the value of diverse communities in providing resistance and resilience to change in marine communities.
Threats to MPA's include: 1) physical disturbance and contaminants, introduction of non-native species that become dominant, climate change
List some benefits of MPA's: Conservation of biodiversity and ecosystems Protection of rare or threatened species Contribute to sustainable ecotourism
MPAs are needed for the conservation of biodiversity, including protection of rare, scarce and threatened _____ & _________ species & habitats
