Kitchen Utensils

Names and uses of common kitchen utensils

TermDefinition
Small Appliances electrical tools that make cooking easier and can be moved easily from one place to another.
Mixers used to blend ingredients, best with multiple speed levels.
Food Processors has a base, container and several blade options; slicing, grating, chopping.
Blender has 3 basic parts, the base, container, and blades which quickly cut, blend, and liquefy foods.
Toaster brown both sides of bread at the same time.
Toaster Oven can do the same jobs as a toaster and full-size over, toasts bread and bakes small amounts of food.
Liquid Measuring Cups measuring tool that has handles and pouring spouts, made of clear glass or plastic with measurements marked on the side of the cup.
Dry Measuring Cups Used to measure flour, sugar and shortening, made of metal or plastic.
Measuring Spoons Used to measure amounts less than 1/4 cup, dry or liquid ingredients.
Chef's Knife has a long triangular blade used to chop and cut vegetables and fruit.
Bread Knife has a serrated blade used to slice bread, cake, and sandwiches without crushing them.
Paring Knife has a short blade used to remove skins from fruits and vegetables.
Peeler used to remove the skin from fruits and vegetables, its blade floats over the food's surface and slices off very thin layers.
Cutting Board protects countertops from getting scratched when food is cut, can be made of wood or plastic.
Grater used to shred and grate vegetables and cheese.
Straight Edged Spatula (metal spatula) has a dull, long, flexible metal blade, can be used to level off dry ingredients when measuring and to spread frosting and smooth ingredients.
Pastry Blender used to blend four and shortening by cutting the shortening into tiny pieces that become coated with flour.
Sifter add air to dry ingredients such as flour
Mixing Bowls used to blend ingredients, come in a variety of sized and materials such as metal, plastic or glass
Rubber Scraper used to clean food from pans and bowls
Turner used to turn hamburgers, pancakes, and eggs as well as to remove foods from a pan.
Tongs used to lift and turn foods and to remove food from hot liquids (such as corn-on-the cob).
Colander Looks like a bowl with many holes in it, used to drain foods.
Strainer used to remove solid pieces from liquid foods.
Cookie Sheet a flat sheet of metal with a low rim used to bake cookies and pizzas.
Muffin Pan many small, round cake pans connected together used to bake muffins, cupcakes, and rolls.
Loaf Pan deep, narrow, and long used to bake bread, pound cake, and meat loaf.
Casserole Dish has high sides and often comes with a lid used for entrees, side dishes and desserts.
