unit 4 vocab: multicellular and unicellular organisms

TermDefinition
unicellular A single celled organism.
Multicellular An organism made up of more than one cell.
Organelles Parts inside of a unicellular organism that perform life functions.
Waste removal The life function of getting rid of waste materials.
Respiration In unicellular organisms, this life function is breaking down food to release energy.
Irritability The life function of responding to the environment.
Reproduction The life function where an organism makes more of it's own kind.
Growth In unicellular organisms, this life function means replacing worn out cell parts; in multicellular organisms, it means getting larger in size.
Urinary system The system in multicellular organisms that gets rid of liquid waste.
Endocrine system Works with the reproductive system in multicellular organisms to perform reproduction.
Nervous system The system that helps multicellular organisms react to their environment.
Vacuole and cell membrane The organelles in unicellular organisms that perform waste removal.
Binary Fission The method by which unicellular organisms reproduce.
Mitochondria The cell organelle that performs respiration in unicellular organisms.
Tissues A group of similar cells working together to perform a specific job.
Organs The structure that is made up of different kinds of tissues that work together to perform a specific life function.
Organ systems A group of organs that work together to perform a major life function.
Respiratory system The system made up of the lungs and other organs that enable a multicellular organism to breathe.
Circulatory System Works with the respiratory system to move oxygen around the body.
Cell division (mitosis) The process multicellualr organisms use to add new cells when growing.
