| heredity | the transmissions of characteristics from parents to offspring. |
| trait | a genetically determined variant of a characteristic, such as yellow flower color. |
| pollination | when pollen grains produced in the male reproductive parts of the flower are transferred to the female reproductive parts of the flower. |
| self-pollination | when pollen is transferred from the anthers of the flower to the stigma of the of that flower. |
| cross-pollination | pollination occurring between flowers of two plants. |

| P generation | the true breeding parents |
| F1 generation | the offspring of the P generation |
| F2 generation | the second filial generation |
| dominant | trait that dominates the trait of the other pair |
| recessive | trait that is controlled by the dominant trait |

| law of independent assortment | states that factors separate independently of one another during the formation of gametes |
