Vocabulary for Ecosystems

TermDefinition
Ecosystem All the living and non-living things in an area working together.
Biotic factor Living things in an ecosystem
Abiotic factor Non-living things in an ecosystem
Habitat A place that gives an organism all things it needs to live.
Community All of a given group of organisms in an ecosystem. Ex. All the trees in the forest.
Population A group of organisms of one kind in an ecosystem. Ex. Oak trees in the forest.
Niche The role that an organism has in its habitat.
Limiting factors Factors that limit how many organisms can live in an area.
Limiting factors Food, Water, Light, Living Space
Carrying capacity How many organisms of a certain population can live in a ecosystem.
