Chapter 8: Section 1
Cell Division
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Binary Fisson | The division of a prokaryotic cell into two offspring cells. |
| Mitosis | Results in new cells within genetic material that is identical to the genetic material of the original cell. |
| Asexual Reproduction | The production of offspring from one parent. |
| Meiosis | Occurs during the formation of gametes. |
| Gametes | Haploid reproductive cells. |
| Interphase | The time between cell divisions that is divided into three phases. |
| Cytokinesis | The division of the cells cytoplasm. |
| Prophase | The first stage of mitosis where chromosomes are a scatered across the cell with spindle fibers. |
| Spindle Fibers | Micro tubules that attach to chromosomes and chromatids in mitosis. |
| Metaphase | The second phase where the spindle fibers pull the chromosomes to the equator of the cell in a straight line. |
| Anaphase | The third phase where the spindle fibers pull the chromosomes apart to opposite poles making chromatids. |
| Telophase | The final phase where the spindle fibers finally pull the chromatids to opposite poles and the cell starts to separate. |
| Cell Plate | The midline of the dividing cell in a plant cell. |
