Biology Vocab S1 C5

TermDefinition
Passive Transport Moves molecules DOWN the concentration gradient. Goes from high to low to maintain equilibrium in the cells. Doesn't require cellular energy.
Diffusion Movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
Concentration Gradient The difference in the concentration of molecules across a distance
Equilibrium When the concentration of molecules are the same throughout the space that the molecules occupy
Osmosis The process by which the water diffuse across the cell membrane from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration
Hypotonic When the concentration of solute molecules outside the cell is LOWER than the concentration in the cytosol
Hypertonic When the concentration of solute molecules outside the cell is HIGHER than the concentration in the cytosol
Isotonic When the concentration of solute molecules outside the cell are EQUAL than the concentration in the cytosol
Contractile Vacuole Organelles that remove water
Turgor Pressure The pressure that water molecules exert against the cell wall
Plasmolysis When the cells shrink way from the cell walls
Cytolysis The bursting of cells
Facilitated Diffusion The transport of substances through a cell membrane along a concentration with the aid carrier proteins
Carrier Protein A protein that transports substances across the cell membrane
Ion Channel A complex of protein molecules in a cell membrane that form a pore through which ions can pass

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
