Term | Definition |

carrier | an organism that does not show disease symptoms but can pass on the disease-causing allele to its offspring |
sex-linked gene | genes that are located on the sex chromosomes |
X chromosome inactivation | when one of the two X chromosomes is randomly "turned off" in female mammals |
incomplete dominance | when a heterozygous phenotype is somewhere between two homozygous phenotypes |
codominance | when both traits are sully and separately expressed |
polygenic trait | traits produced by two or more genes |
linkage map | maps of the relative locations of genes on a chromosome |
pedigree | a chart that can help trace the phenotypes and genotypes in a family to determine whether people carry recessive alleles |
karyotype | a picture of all the chromosomes in a cell |
