Cell Organelles

Cell organelles and their functions

OrganelleFunction
Cytoplasm Holds everything but cell membrane and nucleus
Cytosol Holds non-membrane bound particles and liquid
Nucleus Control center, houses DNA
Nuclear Envelope Decides what goes in and out of nucleus
Centrioles Cell division in animals
Ribosomes Protein factories
Endoplasmic Reticulum Transportation system, synthesizes proteins and lipids
Golgi Apparatus Storage, modification, and packaging of proteins from ER
Lysosomes Break down old, diseased cells and molecules
Peroxisomes Neutralize free radicals, break down fatty acids for mitochondria
Glyoxysomes Break down fats for energy in plant seeds
Vacuoles Store salt, water, protein
Mitochondria Powerhouse of the cell, cellular respiration
Plastid Double membrane organelle in plants
Chloroplasts Turn sunlight into energy, photosynthesis
Cytoskeleton Anchors and supports cell, helps with movement
Microtubules Anchor and support cell
Intermediate Filaments Support shape of nucleus
Microfilaments Help with movement in the cell
Cell membrane Decides what comes in and out of cell, provides protection
Cell wall Provides support and protection for cell
Capsule Part of bacterial cell wall
Peptidoglycan Only part of bacterial cell wall
Nucleoid Area where DNA is located in bacterial cell
Nucleolus Houses DNA and produces ribosomes
Plasmid Small, circular DNA in bacteria
Mesosome Organelles used for division and excretion in bacterial cell membrane
Cilia Short extension that aids in bacterial cell movement
Flagella Long extension that aids in bacterial cell movement
Pili Help cell conjugate with things
Fimbriae Help cell attach to things
DNA Genetic material that is house in nucleus/nucleoid

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
