Vocabulary for mitosis and meiosis

Chromosomes Molecules of DNA and protein. Humans have 23 pairs for a total of 46
Chromatin DNA and protein together
Karyotype A picture of all of the body's chromosomes.
Diploid A cell that has 2 copies of each chromosome.
Haploid A cell that has 1 copy of each chromosome
Sex chromosomes Chromosomes that determine whether you are male or female. (XX or XY)
Mitosis Cellular division where the nucleus is copied. (PMAT)
Cytokinesis The pinching of cell membranes
Cell cycle the different parts of the cell's life span
Cancer uncontrolled cellular division and growth
Mutation A change or deletion of an A,T,C or G in DNA.
Gamete Sex cells (Eggs and Sperm)
Meiosis The division of sex cells. Begins with diploid, ends with a haploid cell.
