Elements and Principles

TermDefinition
What are the elements of design? Line, Shape, Color, Value, Texture, Space
What are the principles of design? Rhythm, Proportion/Scale, Balance, Emphasis, Harmony
What is the principle repetition? Design is copied or repeated at least three times and up.
How does texture affect color? The rougher the texture the more light it absorbs/ is darker and matte. The smoother the busier an intense.
What do curved lines suggest? Soft, Delicate, Natural
What is the difference between horizontal, vertical, and radial balance? When the left and right pars are equal it is horizontal balance, top and bottom is vertical balance, and radial balance is when elements radiate outward from the center.
What do diagonal lines suggest? Excitement, Movement, Speed
What is space? Space is how much room is in the design. In terms of height and width. Example: If trying to give more height to a room one could use tall windows or columns while if trying to add width one might use crown molding.
What are the four types of rhythm? Gradation, Radiation, Repetition, Continuous Line
What is asymmetrical balance? Example? When parts of the design are not identical but are equal in visual weight. Like objects on a bookshelf equally weighed out within it
What is the difference between horizontal and vertical lines? Horizontal lines are relaxing and restful while vertical tend to be strong and formal as well as adds height to a room.
What is the golden mean? The proportionate ratio of 3:5
What is the difference between shape and form? Shape deals with the 2D side of things while Form is 3D
What are the five types of balance? Radial, Vertical, Horizontal, Symmetrical, and Asymmetrical
What does unity or harmony mean? Most to all design elements/principles are found in the design as well as a specific color harmony is identified.
What are the two things texture involves? How something feels or how the way someone thinks it feels.
What are the four types of line? Vertical, Horizontal, Diagonal, Curved
What is proportion? Tells how the design is visually divided
Which of the five types of balance suggests excitement or interest? Asymmetrical Balance
What is symmetrical balance? Example? When parts of the design are equal. Example: humans, insects.
What is emphasis? What is another name for it? Causes one object or idea to stand out, it is also the most dominant aspect of design. Another word for emphasis is Focal point.
What happens when you use a continuous line? The eye follows an unbroken line. Doesn't break up goes all the way.
What is another name for symmetrical balance? Formal Balance
What is another name for asymmetrical balance? Informal Balance
What is the difference between gradation and radiation? Gradation is consistent in everything except for one area while radiation has to move from the center out.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
