principles of design
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What are the elements of design? | shape, line, space, form, color, texture |
| What are the principles of design? | balance, rhythm, emphasis, proportion/scale, harmony |
| What is the principle repetition? | a design is copied and repeated |
| How does texture affect color? | smooth surface reflects more light (making stuff brighter and lighter), rough sources absorb more light (darker and less intense) |
| What do curved lines suggest? | calmness- graceful |
| What is the difference between horizontal, vertical, and radial balance? | elements radiate outwards vs. top and bottom parts are equal vs. left and right parts are equal |
| What do diagonal lines suggest? | movement |
| What is space? | the area provided for a particular purpose 3 ; |
| What are the four types of rhythm? | gradation, radiation, repetition, continuous line |
| What is asymmetrical balance? Example? | parts of design are not identical but are equal in visual height |
| What is the difference between horizontal and vertical lines? | left to right vs. upwards |
| What is the golden mean? | 3:5 ratio |
| What is the difference between shape and form? | a flat image vs. the outlined edges of a 3 dimensional figure |
| What are the five types of balance? | symmetrical, asymmetrical, radial, vertical, horizontal |
| What does unity or harmony mean? | all elements and principles of design work together to create harmony |
| What are the two things texture involves? | how a surface feels to the touch and how it looks like it feels |
| What are the four types of line? | diagonal, curve, horizontal, vertical |
| What is proportion? | tells how the design is visually divided- tells how each of the parts are the right size to fit in |
| Which of the five types of balance suggests excitement or interest? | asymmetrical |
| What is symmetrical balance? Example? | parts of the design are equal (plants insects humans) |
| What is emphasis? What is another name for it? | where one object/idea stands out (focal point) |
| What happens when you use a continuous line? | creates a line for the eye to follow |
| What is another name for symmetrical balance? | identical |
| What is another name for asymmetrical balance? | equal in visual weight |
| What is the difference between gradation and radiation? | gradation only changes in one radiation moves from the center out |
