Elements&Principles

TermDefinition
What are the elements of design? space, line, shape, form, texture
What are the principles of design? Balance, Rhythm, Proportion/Scale, Emphasis, Harmony
What is the principle repetition? repeating something
How does texture affect color? Smooth surfaces reflect more light than rough surfaces; Making them brighter and lighter. Rough surfaces absorb more light making them look darker and less intense
What do curved lines suggest? soft and gracefulness
What is the difference between horizontal, vertical, and radial balance? horizontal is when left and right parts are equal, vertical is when top and bottom parts are equal, and radial is when elements radiate outward from the center
What do diagonal lines suggest? action, movement, and excitement
What is space? The area provided for a particular purpose
What are the four types of rhythm? gradation, radiation, repetition, and continuous line
What is asymmetrical balance? Example? when parts of the design are not identical but are equal in visual weight. Ex: two different decorations but the same size on the sides fireplace mantel
What is the difference between horizontal and vertical lines? vertical leads the eye up adding more height. Horizontal leads the eye from left to right.
What is the golden mean? 3:5 (proportional) ratio
What is the difference between shape and form? form is 3-dimensional, shape is 2-dimensional
What are the five types of balance? Symmetrical, Asymmetrical, Radial, Vertical, and Horizontal
What does unity or harmony mean? All elements and principles of design work together to create harmony.
What are the two things texture involves? Involves how the surface feels to the touch and how it appears to feel
What are the four types of line? Horizontal, Vertical, Diagonal, and Curved
What is proportion? How the design is visually divided ( each of the parts are the right size to belong to the whole.)
Which of the five types of balance suggests excitement or interest? asymmetrical balance
What is symmetrical balance? Example? when parts of the design are equal. Ex plants, insects, humans, etc.
What is emphasis? What is another name for it? It is what causes one object or idea to stand out. Another word is focal point.
What happens when you use a continuous line? Design creates a continuous line for eye to follow
What is another name for symmetrical balance? Formal Balance
What is another name for asymmetrical balance? Informal Balance
What is the difference between gradation and radiation? Gradation the designs increase or decrease in size. Radiation, lines/designs move out from the center point

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
