Parts of a Plant

What are the three things that plants give us? oxygen, food, and medicine
What are the three main parts of plants? Roots, stems and leaves
What are the two things roots do for a plant? Anchor the plant and absorb water and nutrients
What do root hairs do for the plant? They absorb water and minerals from the soil
What is a root tip? A slimy end of the root that helps the root push into the soil
What are the two types of roots? Tap roots and fibrous roots
Describe a tap root. A single large root that grows deep and stores food through the winter
Describe fibrous roots Smaller roots that spread out in all directions - usually lies dormant during the winter
What two things do stems do for the plant? Provide support and allow movement of water and nutrients
What are the two types of tubes in the stem of a plant? Xylem and phloem
What do xylem tubes do? Carry water and nutrients up to leaves
What do phloem tubes do? Transport food from the leaves to the rest of the plant.
What are the two types of stems? Green stems and woody stems
Describe a green stem. Green, short and soft - usually lie dormant through the winter
Describe a woody stem. Strong and grow taller and wider with age - usually live through the winter
What are tree rings? A ring of cells that grow around the stem each year as the plant gets older
What can tree rings tell you? How old the tree is and what kind of weather and growth it had each year
What function do the plants leaves perform? They make food for the plant - they use sunlight, water and carbon dioxide to make food
Describe a plants' veins. They are bundles of tube like structures that carry food and water throughout the plants leaves, stems and roots
What are the tiny holes on the underside of the leaves that allow the plant to take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide Stomata
What is the name of the process plants use to make food? Photosynthesis
What are the inputs to the process of photosynthesis? Sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide
What are the outputs from the process of photosynthesis? Sugars (food) and oxygen
