| Term | Definition |

| cell | the basic building blocks of all living things |
| cell division | the process of one cell splitting into two cells; this is how new cells are made |
| specialized cells | cells that are part of a larger group that helps make up a portion of an organism's body (bone cells, blood cells, muscle cells, etc.) |
| tissue | made up of a group of cells working together to perform a function |
| organ | made up of a group of tissues working together to perform a function |
| organ system | made up of a group of organs working together to perform a function |
| cell membrane | the layer around the outside of a cell that gives the cell its shape |
| nucleus | a large, round organelle usually found in the center of the cell; the cell's control center |
| cytoplasm | a fluid substance that fills the space in the cell |
| chloroplast | a green structure in a cell where sunlight is used to produce food for the plant |
| chlorophyll | a green chemical located in the chloroplast that uses energy from sunlight to make food for the plant |
| cell wall | an additional outer covering around the outside of plant cells |
