Developmental Theorist Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| Theory | A principle or idea that is proposed, research, and generally accepted as an explanation. |
| Neuron | Specialized nerve cells (brain) |
| Synapse | Connections between nerve cells that pass messages to the brain. |
| Cognitive Development | Growth in the mental process used to gain knowledge, such as thought, reasoning, and imagination. |
| Object Permanence | The concept that an object still exists even when it is out of sight. |
| Personality | A combination of characteristics or qualities that form a persons distinctive character. |
| Assimilation | The new concept learned by a child must fit into what the child already knows. |
| Social-Emotional Development | Growth in the two related areas of social and emotional skills. |
| Physical Development | Physical body changes in a growing human, such as, changes in size, weight, and coordination. |
| Early Childhood | The time period in a persons life from birth until age nine. |
