introduction to cells
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| plasma membrane | covers a cells surface and acts as as a barrier between the inside and the outside of a cell |
| cytoplasm | the region of the cell that is within the plasma membrane and that includes he fluid, the cytoskeleton, and all of the organelles except the nucleus |
| cytosol | the part of the cytoplasm that includes molecules and small particles such as ribosomes |
| nucleus | the membranebound structure located in the center of a cell |
| prokaryote | organisms that lack a membrane-bound nucleus and organelle |
| eukaryote | organisms made up of one or more cells that have a nucleus and membrane-bound nucleus |
| organelle | subcellular structures-well-defined intracellular bodies that perform specific functions for the cell |
| tissue | a group of similar cells and their products that carry out a specific function |
| organ | groups of tissues that perform a particular job in an organism |
| organ system | a group of organs that accomplish related tasks |
