Chapter 2 Section 2 Terms

energy the ability to do work
chemical reaction happens when one or more substances change to produce one or more different substances
reactant shown on the left side of an equation
product shown on the right side of an equation
metabolism the term used to describe all of the chemical reactions that occur in an organism
activation energy the amount of energy needed to start a reaction
catalyst chemical substances that reduce the amount of activation energy that is needed for a reaction to take place
enzyme a protein or RNA molecule that speeds up metabolic reactions without being permanently changed or destroyed
redox reaction reactions in which electrons are transferred between atoms and are known as oxidation reduction reactions
oxidation reaction a reactant loses one or more electrons, thus becoming more positive in charge
reduction reaction when a reactant gains one or more electrons, thus becoming more negative in charge
