Chapter 2 Section 2 Terms

| energy | the ability to do work |
| chemical reaction | happens when one or more substances change to produce one or more different substances |
| reactant | shown on the left side of an equation |
| product | shown on the right side of an equation |
| metabolism | the term used to describe all of the chemical reactions that occur in an organism |
| activation energy | the amount of energy needed to start a reaction |
| catalyst | chemical substances that reduce the amount of activation energy that is needed for a reaction to take place |
| enzyme | a protein or RNA molecule that speeds up metabolic reactions without being permanently changed or destroyed |
| redox reaction | reactions in which electrons are transferred between atoms and are known as oxidation reduction reactions |
| oxidation reaction | a reactant loses one or more electrons, thus becoming more positive in charge |
| reduction reaction | when a reactant gains one or more electrons, thus becoming more negative in charge |
