Microscope Parts and Functions

TermDefinition
Stage Supports the slide being viewed
Coarse adjustment knob Moves the stage up and down to focus the slide in large increments
Fine adjustment knob Moves the stage up and down slightly to focus the slide in small increments
Stage clips Hold the slide in place on the stage
Light Shines light through the specimen
Ocular lens Lens closest to the user's eye; magnifies the image 10x
Objective lenses Lens closest to the slide; magnifies the image 4x, 10x or 40x
Base and arm Supports the weight of the microscope
Diaphragm Regulates/controls the amount of light that can pass through a specimen
