Chapter 2.2. Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Energy the ability to do work
Chemical Reaction one or more substances change to produce one or more different substances
Reactant a substance or molecule that participates in a chemical reaction
Product a substance that forms a chemical reaction
Metabolism the term used to describe all of the chemical reactions that occur in an organism
Activation Energy in many chemical reactions, the amount of energy needed to start the reaction
Catalyst certain chemical substances
Enzyme a protein or RNA molecule that speeds up metabolic reactions without being permanently changed or destroyed
Redox Reaction reactions in which electrons are transferred between atoms
Oxidation Reaction reactions in which reactants lose one or more electrons, thus becoming positive in charge
Reduction Reaction reactions in which a reactant gains one or more electrons, thus becoming more negative in charge
