| Energy | the ability to do work |
| Chemical Reaction | one or more substances change to produce one or more different substances |
| Reactant | a substance or molecule that participates in a chemical reaction |
| Product | a substance that forms a chemical reaction |
| Metabolism | the term used to describe all of the chemical reactions that occur in an organism |
| Activation Energy | in many chemical reactions, the amount of energy needed to start the reaction |
| Catalyst | certain chemical substances |
| Enzyme | a protein or RNA molecule that speeds up metabolic reactions without being permanently changed or destroyed |
| Redox Reaction | reactions in which electrons are transferred between atoms |
| Oxidation Reaction | reactions in which reactants lose one or more electrons, thus becoming positive in charge |
| Reduction Reaction | reactions in which a reactant gains one or more electrons, thus becoming more negative in charge |
