| scientific method | science is characterized by an organized approach, to learn how the natural world works |
| observation | the act of perceiving a natural occurrence that causes someone to pose a question |
| hypothesis | is a proposed explanation or the ay a particular aspect of the natural work functions |
| prediction | a statement that forecasts what would happen in a test situation if the hypothesis has been concluded, the data analyzed and used to draw conclusions |
| experiment | used to test a hypothesis and its predictions |
| control group | provides a normal standard against which the biologist can compare results of the experimental group |
| experimental group | identical to the control group except for one factor, the independent variable |
| independent variable | the one thing changed in an experiment |
| dependent variable | this is the outcome of the independent variable, or what is affected by the independent variable |
| theory | when a set of related hypotheses is confirmed to be true many times, and it can be explained with a great amount of data |
| peer review | scientists who are experts in a field anonymously read and critique that research paper |
