Characteristics of Life Notes

an organism is... any living thing
what makes a living thing living cells, reproduction, oxygen, carbon, water, needs to eat (energy), sunlight, breathing.
cells -cells are the smallest unit of all life processes. - unicellular/multicellular l l -prokaryote / eukaryote
reproduction -make more of own kind -parents or parent cells - biogenesis- life comes from life
life span/ develop and grow -birth -growth -maturity -decline -death
metabolism -the sum of all chemical reactions in an organism -requires energy -plants get energy from sun -make own food, autotrophs -animals get energy from food eaten - cannot make own food, heterotrops
homeostasis -stabailizing internal conditions regardless of external environment -adaptions
adapt to change/respond to stimuli -stimulus *scream -response * jump
pass characteristics on to offspring heredity- passing on traits from parent to offspring gene- basic unit of heredity mutation- change *helpful *harmful
adapt and evolve adaption- short term changes in individuals evolution- long term changes in a species natural selection- (charles darwin)\ *more favorable traits *pass along to offspring *species
interdependence - all organisms interact in a community -ecology *organisms "biotic" *environment "abiotic" - food chains/ food webs.
