ECE3-08 Integrating Technology in Learning for the young child

NAEYC Position Statement on Technology technology and interactive media should be used intentionally as a tool to support, not replace, active, hands-on, and empowering experiences for young children, with adult mediation and clear goals to enhance learning and development
Unmonitored use of technology can lead to serious issues, including exposure to online predators, negative impacts on emotional and educational development, and increased risk of aggressive behavior
Excessive use of technology associated with a range of negative effects, including physical health issues like obesity and sleep problems, mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, and aggression, and developmental problems
Limits for use of technology <18 months, avoid screen-based media except video chatting. 18 to 24 months, high-quality programming and watch with their children. 2 to 5, limit screen time to one hour per day 6 and up, establish consistent limits on the time Use parental controls
Ratings systems like the MPAA (movies) and TV Parental Guidelines (TV) that inform viewers and parents about content to help determine suitability for different age groups
Minimum Age guidelines generally, media and technology should not be used for kids under 18 months, and very limited use until over the age of 6
Social Media negatively impacts children by increasing rates of anxiety, depression, and poor self-esteem
Assistive Device tools and equipment designed to help people with disabilities perform daily tasks, improve living and working capabilities, and maintain independence
Devices (hardware) machines designed for specific practical purposes
