abiotic any nonliving component of an environment: NEVER ALIVE
autotroph an organism that makes its own food
biodiversity the number of different species in a given area
biosphere The entire portion of Earth inhabited by life; the sum of all the planet's ecosystems.
biotic the living organisms in an ecosystem
carnivore a consumer that eats only animals
carrying capacity The largest population that an area can support
community combination of all of the different populations that live and interact in the same environment
competition the struggle between organisms to survive in a habitat with limited resources
consumer organism that obtains food by eating other organisms
decomposer organisms, such as fungi and bacteria, that break down and absorb nutrients from dead organisms
ecological niche A specific role of a species within an ecosystem, including its use of resources, and relationships with other species
ecological succession series of changes by which one habitat is replaced by another
ecology study of how organisms interact with the living and noliving things that surround them
ecosytem all the living and non
energy pyramid diagram that shows the how food energy moves through the ecosystem
environment All living and nonliving components of an organism's surroundings.

limiting factors environmental factors that restrict population growth
parasite an organism that lives and feeds on other organisms.

predator an animal that hunts and kills other animals for food
prey an animal that is hunted and killed by predators
producer an organism that makes its own food
scavenger A carnivore that feeds on the bodies of dead organisms
