| Consumer | Any heterotrophic organism that eats producers or other consumers. |
| Food chain | Series of organisms through which energy is transferred. |
| Biosphere | Portion of the earth in which living things exist. |
| Carnivore | Meat eating organism. |
| Biodiversity | When a wide variety of different species live together in an ecosystem. |
| Habitat | Place where organisms live. |
| Food web | Diagram composed of several different food chains. |
| Competition | Struggle for resources among organisms. |
| Ecology | The study of how organisms interact with other living things and their physical environment. |
| Herbivore | Plant/producer eating organism. |
| Predator | Organism that hunts, kills, and eats the prey. |
| Limiting factors | Any biotic/abiotic factors that can limit the growth of species populations in an environment. |
| Community | A level or biological organization that includes all the population in a region. |
| Prey | Organism that is killed and eaten by the predator. |
| Carrying capacity | The number of individuals the environment can support. |
| Ecosystem | A self sustaining community such as an aquarium. |
| Niche | The role that each species plays in an ecosystem. |
| Decomposer | Organism that breaks down dead or decaying organisms. |
| Succession | The gradual replacement of one community for another until a climax (final) community is in place. |
