Sex-linked gene A gene that is carried on the X or Y chromosome; these traits occur more in males than females
Carrier A person who has one recessive allele for a trait and one dominant allele, but does not have the trait.
Pedigree A chart or " family tree" that tracks wich members of a family have particular trait.
Genetic Disorder An abnormal condition that a person inherits through genes or chromosomes.
Genome All of the DNA in one cell of an organism.
Species A group of similar organisms whose members can mate whith one another and produce fertile offspring.
Natural Selection The process by which individuals that are better adapted to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce than other members of the same species.
Adapation A characteristic that helps an organism survive in its environment or reproduce.
Relative Dating A technique used to determine which of two fossils is older.
Absolute Dating A technique used to determine the actual age of a fossil.
variation any differences (good or bad) among members of the same species
Female Sex Chromosomes XX
Male Sex Chromosomes XY
mold a fossil formed when an organism buried in sediment dissolves, leaving a hollow area
cast a fossil that is a copy of an organism’s shape, formed when mineral seep into a mold
