TermDefiniion
Autosome The 44 human chromosomes that are not sex chromosomes.
Genome The full set of genetic information that an organism carries in its DNA.
Karyotype A picture that shows chromosomes grouped together in pairs.
Pedigree A chart that shows the relationships in a family.
Sex Chromosomes The chromosomes that determine if an individual is a male or female.
Sex-linked gene A gene located on a sex chromosome.
Nondisjunction An error in meiosis in which homologous chromosomes fail to separate.
Bioinformatics A field of study that combines molecular biology and information science.
Gel electrophoresis A procedure used to separate and analyze DNA fragments by placing a mixture of DNA fragments at one end of a porous gel and applying an electrical voltage to the gel.
Genomics The study of whole genomes.
Restriction Enzyme An enzyme that cuts DNA.
